NEW MAZDA CX5 AT NAPLETON'S MAZDA OF URBANA

To view the new Mazda CX5 at Napleton's Mazda of Urbana is to look at one of the most exciting "right-sized" vehicles on the road today. And did we mention it's fun to drive? No? Well, it's for the corner clipper in all of us. It's, simply put, one of the sportiest compact crossover vehicles available anywhere. Period. Full stop.

The Mazda CX5 could be considered a premium vehicle with a mainstream price. Let's take a closer look:

What is the new Mazda CX5?

The new Mazda CX5 is the second-generation of this mid-sized sport utility vehicle. It is a four-door hatchback, five-passenger Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). Power comes from a choice of a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. Entirely adequate, this powerplant propels the CX5 to highway speeds in the blink of an eye, thanks to the included "Sport" mode that is adjustable via a center console switch. Zero to 60 mph comes on in 8.6 seconds.

If you crave additional power, you can opt for the new 2.5-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder that makes 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque when using 93 octane fuel. The CX5 utilizes a six-speed automatic transmission in both front- and all-wheel-drive versions, with a 0-to-60 mph in 6.4 seconds.

Every new Mazda CX5 includes G-Vectoring Control Plus to help with vehicle stability when cornering. That's what gives the CX5 its sporty ride. It enables you to make subtle torque reductions, even using minute brake applications to help the CX5 cut corners like its smaller Mazda Miata sibling.

How does the Mazda CX5 look?

Featuring a long (medium) sized nose with jet fighter intake in the front, LED headlights, and just the right amount of chrome bling around the grille opening, the CX5 does its best to embrace the zoom-zoom theme. It really does, thanks to the swept-back windshield, sculpted sides, and handsome rear quarter.

The Mazda CX5 is available in a wide variety of trim levels including Sport, Touring, Touring Preferred SV, Carbon Edition, Grand Touring and Grand Touring Reserve.

What about inside the Mazda CX5?

Full of class inside, the new Mazda CX5 is notable for a large 10.25-inch touchscreen display located at the top of the center console. Situated for a driver to reach out and touch, the touchscreen display can also be operated by the central control dial located on the center console.

The rear seat can accommodate up to three passengers, although this area is better suited to a pair rather than a trio. Wide opening doors help gain access to the second row to install child seats and other items you'll carry. Behind that second row is 30.9 cubic feet of storage space. Fold the rear seat forward, and that space grows to 59.6 cubic feet.

Mazda CX-5 Features

Even the most basic…

Even if you order the entry-level Mazda CX5 model, it doesn't mean it isn't well equipped. The CX5 comes standard with a new 10.25-inch touchscreen display; gray 17-inch allow wheels; a pair of USB ports, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; LED headlights with auto high-beams; rain-sensing wipers and dual exhausts. That's quite a lot for starters.
