The Mazda Mazda3 at Napleton's Mazda of Urbana

It's one of the most revered Mazda vehicles on the road today. The Mazda Mazda3 has a cult-like following and for good reason. It runs like nobody's business, features so many bits that pay attention to detail and is good looking besides. 

But still, you ask, what makes it so popular? We were afraid you would never ask.

What is the Mazda3?

The Mazda3 is a four-door, five-passenger hatchback or sedan with a trunk that combines a premium driving experience with top-flight equipment, superb handling and more. The Mazda3 is powered by choice of three engines, beginning with a 2.0-liter inline-4 that makes 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. Next is a 2.5-liter inline-4 making 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. It is available in front- or all-wheel-drive configurations. 

Finally, the new 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 cylinder produces 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque when fueled with 93 octane gasoline. It is only available in the hatchback body style and with Mazda's all-wheel-drive powertrain. G-Vectoring Control Plus, Mazda's torque vectoring system, is standard on all models.

The transmission is a six-speed automatic that is one of the smoothest shifters on the road today. It is the only gearbox offered unless you select the Mazda3 Premium package, which includes a six-speed manual transmission for those who appreciate rowing the car themselves.

So impressed were some automotive critics that they called the Mazda3 Turbo the second coming of the Mazdaspeed 3. That cult-classic offered legendary power and handling, but honestly, after driving this version of it, we think it takes the Mazdaspeed 3 to the next level, offering a sense of refinement that never existed in the original model.

A quick walk-around the Mazda3

The sleek look of Mazda's Soul of Motion design ethos is clearly apparent in the Mazda3, which is available as a four-door sedan or a five-door hatchback. The sedan is one of the most handsome on the road today. Conversely, the good looks of the hatchback also command respect. Both cars are garage-friendly, measuring no more than 183.5 inches. 

The Mazda Mazda3 2.0 base model is equipped with 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, while the Mazda3 2.5S, 2.5S Select, 2.5S Preferred, Premium and Turbo models ride on 18-inch alloys instead. All told, there are eight different trim levels!

What about inside the Mazda3?

Stylish but strictly business is a good way to describe the Mazda3 interior. Buyers may choose between cloth, leatherette and genuine leather. There are soft-touch materials throughout, covering all touchpoints from the dashboard, door panels and center armrest. A bright 8.8-inch display anchors the audio and navigation systems and is controlled by a console-mounted rotary dial. 

Seating is comfortable throughout, with ample legroom for rearseat passengers. The sedan's trunk offers 13 cubic feet of space, while the hatchback ups that amount to 20 cubic feet. Both styles offer fold-down rear seats, which increases the cargo-hauling abilities even more. 

What's available with the new Mazda3?

Ordering the new Turbo models opens a new realm of possibilities for a Mazda3 owner. These models are loaded and equipped with head-up displays, a power moonroof, dual-zone climate controls, heated front seats, leatherette upholstery, and the i-Activsense safety suite of driver assists.

Driver-Attention Monitoring is also on-board and detects changes in driving patterns that indicate driver fatigue. Rear Cross-traffic Alert is standard on the Select and higher models and causes radar to detect traffic crossing behind you as you attempt to back from a spot. It could make the difference between a nice- and not-so-nice day.
