MAZDA CX9 AT NAPLETON'S MAZDA OF URBANA

The largest of Mazda's family of SUVs, the new Mazda CX9 is a three-row crossover that features the ability to carry up to seven passengers in absolute comfort. Is it a track-capable family hauler or more? Read on to find out more about this exceptionally-valued vehicle. 

What is the Mazda CX9?

It's three-rows strong with an upscale interior, four doors and a hatch. The new Mazda CX9 at Napleton's Mazda of Urbana is the largest in the brand's portfolio. It's in a class by itself. Sized as a mid-sized Crossover, the CX9 is easy to get in and out of an urban center and is the perfect size for a cross-country road trip. 

The CX9 gets its power from a small-but-mighty 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder Skyactiv-G engine that makes 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel. Put in the 93-octane "good stuff," and the horsepower increases to 250-hp, with torque jumping to 320 lb-ft. Power works its way through a 6-speed automatic transmission and ends up at the front wheels. All-wheel-drive is an available option and recommended during an Illinois winter. The total package is so good that it displays power normally seen in the V6 engines of some of its rivals.

How does the Mazda CX9 look?

Elegant and sporty at the same time, the Mazda CX9 is the ultimate family hauler. A result of the brand's "Soul of Motion" design philosophy, it includes an exclusive, sophisticated appearance at a price far below that of its rivals. Sweeping sheet metal, organic shapes, and an expression of motion even while standing-still are all characteristics of the look.

The large, aircraft-inspired grille appears perfectly suited for the leading edge of the CX9. The tapered look of the greenhouse leading back to the rear deck treatment only enhanced the entire look. The chrome exhaust finishers provide an appropriate rear view of this beautifully laid out crossover.

A look inside the CX9.

The inside of the CX9 shows a luxury vehicle that appears like the finest from Germany rather than the Pacific Rim. This accomplished cabin is sophisticated and well turned-out using the finest materials, including leather, wood, and aluminum. From the driver's position, controls are logically placed all the way down to the aluminum control knob on the central console. From here, you can operate the 7- or 9-inch infotainment screen and the CX9 audio system.

If properly equipped, the CX9 can carry up to seven passengers. The exception would be if you chose to outfit your CX9 with twin captain's chairs rather than the power-operated bench seats. We think it's the perfect road tripper, and by dropping the third-row bench, you gain up to 71.2-cubic feet of cargo space.

Outfitting the Mazda CX9

On its own, the CX9 is very well-equipped. Available in Sport, Touring, Grand Touring and Signature trim levels, even the base version is well stocked with 3-zone climate control, keyless entry, LED headlights, a power driver's seat with lumbar support, heated front seats, rain-sensing wipers, a seven-inch touchscreen display and a rearview camera as well as 18-inch wheels.

Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist and more. The base audio system includes internet streaming radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and an AM/FM/HD radio with USB inputs.
