Through the years, the Mazda MX5 Miata has evolved into the sports car of today. But if you really start to peel back the layers, you'll notice that the MX5 still holds hard and fast to its original premise: That of its original design philosophy, Jinba Ittai, which means "Oneness of Horse and rider." 

What is the MX5 Miata?

A two-seat roadster (also available as the Mazda MX5 Miata RF - for retractable fastback), the MX5 Miata is the latest in four generations of the "go-kart on steroids" that fans of the vehicle have referred to it as. The Miata gets its power from a 2.0-liter inline-4 that produces 181 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. Recently tweaked, it now provides more performance and fuel economy than ever before. 

It is available with a stellar 6-speed manual transmission that places a ton of mid-range torque available on demand. If you are of the two-pedal variety, an equally slick automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle-shift levers stands ready for you to channel your favorite road racer from the driver's seat.

The suspension is tightly sprung, the steering is precise and the feel behind the wheel is sublime. That's why the Miata is so popular amongst the sports car set, filled with many drivers who build up a second Miata as a purpose-built race car.

While the MX5 Miata has evolved through the years, it continues its core premise of being the perfectly-balanced sports car that feels as one with the driver and vice-versa. To that end, it maintains the original footprint as introduced in 1989, but with a new, stylish attitude. Featuring a very sporting long-hood/short-deck layout, it is, first and foremost, a classic roadster. There is a little more style this time, with surface details all-around. Small LED headlights and flared wheel wells add to the playfulness set off by the wide-mouth grille in front.

The MX5 Miata has a choice of roofs ranging from the soft-top convertible that can be lowered using one hand or as the RF with its power retractable fastback roof. The choice is left up to you, your style and taste.

What about inside the Miata?

Simple and to the point is the way we would describe the cabin of the Miata. Designed to hold two full-size adults, it contains all the modern features found in contemporary Mazda vehicles today. Simple controls and a tablet-like display are all that are present. If you need more than this, you are missing the point of the MX5.

How is the MX5 Miata equipped?

The MX5 is available in Sport, Club or Grand Touring models. Each version includes the i-Activesense suite of driver assists including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning with low-speed emergency braking and lane-departure warning.

A rear-view camera is also on tap, along with a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, two USB ports and cruise control.

Stepping up to the Club edition adds a sport-tuned suspension and Bilstein shocks, a limited-slip differential, strut tower brace, a Bose 9-speaker audio system and Apple CarPlay / Android Auto connectivity.
